PIONEER HALLWAY
Assembled here are primitive tools, country store items, and an old Post Office fixture holding letter boxes. Look up and see the rare pioneer mouldboard plow, assembled with wooden pegs. Also in this hallway is the C. S. Bell display. A desk from the foundry is most noticeable. Above it hangs a portrait of Mr. Bell. Other ephemera connected with Mr. Bell or the foundry can be viewed. The three ship’s bells mounted on the wall were manufactured in Hillsboro at the C. S. Bell Foundry for use by the U.S. Navy, British and Russian ships during World War II. The letters found on these World War II era bells are HMS—His Majesty’s Ship and USN—U.S. Navy. The third bell, lettered in Cyrillic, is translated “Victory”. These bells were used to signal time on the ships. Be sure to view the commemoration of the last bell poured at the found in 1990. The C. S. Bell Company also produced corn shellers as well as cane mills, used in the production of sugar and sorghum. There is a stove made by the C. S. Bell Company specifically to be used in railroad cars. In the display case are many items of local interest and used in agriculture, carpentry or commerce. We have two safes in this area—the smaller was used as a time capsule in 1957 and was locked with many items of local interest during Hillsboro’s Sesqui-Centennial. It was opened when Hillsboro celebrated it’s 200th birthday in 2007. The larger safe was made in Hillsboro by the Gross-Feibel Company. |
